Ascension Valdez Obituary

Ascension “Janie” Valdez, 80, went to be with our Lord on September 13, 2022 at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. She was the widow of Jose Alfredo Gonzales and the current wife of Eligio “Lico” Valdez. She married Jose Gonzales July 21, 1962. They were married until his death in 2011. She married Eligio Valdez September 21, 2013. She was born April 23, 1942 in Floresville, Texas to Prudencio and Juanita Marín. Janie was employed by Lubbock Independent School District for over 30 years, working as a bilingual testing administrator, teaching assistant, and home-school liaison. For 60 years, she was an active member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, and served alongside her friends, the Guadalupanas. She was committed to serving and praising the Lord, praying the rosary for others at the time of their loss. She also enjoyed sewing, spending time with family, and singing to her heart’s content. Janie will be remembered for her love of children, her servant’s heart, and her faithfulness to God Almighty. She is survived by her husband, Eligio Valdez, one sister Maria Marin her children: Joe Gonzales, Jr. (Stella), Fred Rodriguez (Melissa), Belinda Vazquez (Luis), Johnny Gonzales (Lillie), Irene Longoria (Samuel), Anna Montalvo, and Alma Cunningtubby (Ricky), 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great -grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, a husband, siblings: Sabas Marin, Eufemio Marin, Vicenta Miranda, Francis Garcia, and Manuela Rios, and 1 granddaughter: Marisa Hernandez. Funeral services will be held on Monday September 19th at 2:00pm at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Lubbock, Texas with Father Rudy Castra officiating. Visitation is on Saturday, September 17th and Sunday, September 18th from 3:00-9:00, with a rosary at 7:00 both evenings. Burial immediately following services will be at Peaceful Gardens Cemetery.
