Wilbur B. Martinez, affectionately known as "El Cuate," left us on October 1, 2025, at the age of 65. Born on September 27, 1960, in Lubbock, Texas, Wilbur was a beloved figure in the Guadalupe neighborhood, where he became well-known for his friendly demeanor and infectious spirit.
A dedicated auto mechanic and carpenter by trade, Wilbur found immense joy in working on cars. His craftsmanship and skills were apparent to all who knew him. He attended Lubbock High School and pursued his passion for automotive work at the Texas School of Automotive Trade, laying the groundwork for a career that brought him satisfaction and fulfillment. Music was one of Wilbur's greatest treasures. He spent countless hours listening to his favorite bands and artists.
Wilbur had an incredible talent for brightening the lives of those around him. He had a unique ability to joke and make everyone laugh, earning him a reputation as the life of every gathering. His unwavering spirit of perseverance and wisdom touched many hearts, while his remarkable life serves as an inspiration for kindness and personal growth. He cared deeply for his friends, making countless wonderful memories that his loved ones will cherish forever.
Always on the move, Wilbur enjoyed riding his scooter throughout the neighborhood, a sign of his friendly connections with everyone he met. He embraced life fully, exhibiting a passion for his hobbies and engaging with people in a way that was memorable and deeply appreciated.
Wilbur is survived by his loving mother whom he provided company and care for, Erlinda B. Martinez; sister Teresa A. Torres and her husband David; aunt Irene Manzanalez and her husband Nick; uncle Ben Bitela, Jr. and his wife Minerva; and his cousin with whom he was raised as a brother, Jeffrey Bitela. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who will continue to carry his legacy of humor and perseverance forward.
Wilbur was preceded in death by his father, Ebaristo Martinez; brothers Gilbert B. Martinez, Ross Martinez, and Michael Lee Martinez; maternal grandmother Anita Berlanga; maternal grandfather Ben Bitela, Sr.; and aunt Olga B. Martinez.
As we remember Wilbur B. Martinez, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by laughter, love, and an enduring spirit that will resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing him. His remarkable legacy serves as a testament to his character, inspiring us to do better and to be kind to others.
