Sabino Chapa, Jr., 82, of Slaton went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at Covenant Medical Center of Lubbock.
Mass of resurrection is Monday (March 11) at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Slaton with Father Philip Pasupil officiating. Interment will follow at Englewood Cemetery. Rosary will be led by Deacon Phillip Maldonado on Sunday (March 10) at 7 p.m. at Guajardo Funeral Chapels in Lubbock.
Sabino was born on Saturday, January 16, 1937 to Sabino Chapa, Sr. and Maria Rivera in Victoria. He was one of nine siblings. He moved to Slaton at a young age with his family. He was a lifelong resident of Slaton.
Sabino attended Slaton ISD until the third grade and then started working to help his family. He retired from Farmers Co-op Compress in 1999. He also worked for the City of Slaton with the water department for a short time.
Sabino married Augustina Gonzales at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Slaton. They were married for 46 years when she proceeded him in death on November 28, 2001. He then entered into a relationship with Emma Villanueva in 2005. Sabino and Emma were companions for 14 years.
He was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Slaton.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Sabino Chapa, Sr and Maria Rivera; his wife, Augustina; five brothers, Luis Rivera, Manual Chapa, Juan Chapa, Frank Chapa, and Jesus Chapa; three sisters, Adelaida Rocha, Guadalupe Rodriguez and Victoria Chapa; two sons, Ramon Chapa and Jose Chapa; and one daughter, Carmen Chapa.
Sabino is survived by his companion, Emma; two daughters, Rosa (Arturo) Romo of Slaton and Frances Perez of Lubbock; five sons, John Chapa of Slaton, Thomas (Stephanie) Chapa of Slaton, Roy Chapa of Slaton, Pete (Leticia) Chapa of Lubbock and Raymond (Patricia) Chapa of Slaton; 21 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and one brother, Teodoro (Dolores) Chapa of Levelland. He is also survived by Emma's children, Patricio Villanueva, Alma Villanueva, Dolores Armendariz, Christina Mendez, Gloria Olivares, Beatrice Ables, Ramon Villanueva, Martin Villanueva, James Villanueva and Hilario Villanueva.
Memorial donations may be made in Sabino's name to The American Cancer Society.
