Margarita Garza Barrera

Margarita Garza Barrera, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully entered eternal rest on the morning of May 15, 2026, at the age of 83, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Margarita married Benito Barrera in the year 1960, in Littlefield, and moved to Lubbock in 1962. Together, they built a beautiful life anchored in love, faith, and a sprawling family tree that will carry their legacy for generations to come.

A woman of unwavering Catholic faith, Margarita was actively involved in her religious community. She found solace and strength in praying the rosary and was a devoted participant in offering rosaries for those who had passed. She was a member of the San Lorenzo Guadalupanas and a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Sisters of the Holy Trinity #2802 in Idalou. Her love for singing prayers and hymns filled the choirs she belonged to throughout Lubbock and its surrounding areas.

Margarita’s generosity extended beyond her spiritual life. She loved cooking for her family and friends and always kept her door open to those in need. Her tender care was also evident in her garden, where she especially cherished tending to roses and vines. Staying active was important to her, and she enjoyed participating in a local senior fitness group, embracing life fully at every stage.

She is survived by her children: Ricardo Carabajal (Donna), Ruben Barrera (Gladys), Alfredo Barrera (Georgina), Joann Barrera, Sandra Hernandez (Arturo), Rafael Barrera (Crystal), and Jessica Towery, who, although not formally adopted, was deeply loved as part of the family. Margarita’s legacy is further carried on by 26 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings Jorge Garza (Gloria Herrera) and Leo Carabajal (Hortencia).

Margarita was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Benito Barrera; her father, Guadalupe Garza; stepmother, Theodora Garza; stepfather, Pedro Carabajal; and mother, Elvira Carabajal.

Margarita Barrera’s life was a testament to devotion, kindness, and strength. She touched the hearts of all who knew her and left behind a powerful example of faith and love that will continue to inspire her family and community for years to come. Her memory will forever be cherished by those she held dear.

The family warmly invites all who knew and loved Margarita to join in honoring her life and memory. Visitation will be held on May 20, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and continue on May 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., both at Guajardo Funeral Chapels, located at 407 N University Ave, Lubbock, Texas 79415. A rosary will be prayed on May 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the same location.
