Jonathan DePaul Vela, affectionately known as "Jon Jon," left this world far too soon on June 1, 2025, in his beloved hometown of Lubbock, Texas. Born on January 9, 1983, Jon was more than just a son, husband, and father; he was a vibrant soul whose spirit touched the hearts of all those fortunate enough to know him.
Jon was a man of immeasurable love and kindness. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his family, ensuring that each moment shared was one that would be cherished. His laughter was infectious, and his ability to bring a smile to the faces around him was unparalleled. He was known for his big heart, always putting others before himself. His forgiveness and understanding meant he never held a grudge, allowing him to navigate life with a positivity that uplifted everyone near him.
Throughout his journey, Jon faced challenges that many would find insurmountable. Doctors told him that he would not reach the age of 40, yet he not only defied those odds but did so with courage and grace, proving that his spirit was as indomitable as his love for family and friends.
Jon found joy in the simplest of moments, whether it was cooking out, playing video games, or spending quality time with his daughter, Mia. He cherished taking Mia on special dates, moments they both looked forward to and treasured. Furthermore, he enjoyed family time and shared passion for sports by throwing a football or basketball around with anyone eager to join in.
His music preferences reflected his joyous and passionate nature, with a particular love for Christian rap artists such as Craig James and KG Santiago. His kind, funny, and considerate personality was a light in a sometimes dark world, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the honor of calling him family or friend.
Jon is survived by his loving wife Amanda Sanchez Vela and their four children: Jesiah, Christian, Abraham, and Mia Luna Vela. He is also survived by his siblings—three sisters, Tanya Vela, Annaliza Davila, Jessica Buenrostro—and his brother, Victor Vela, along with an incredible 32 nieces and nephews.
Jon joins those who have passed from this life, including his parents, Glenda Gayle Sission and Richard Vela, and his late brother Richard Michael (Miguel) Vela, as well as his sister Jeanessa Vela. Their spirits will undoubtedly find comfort in the warmth of Jon’s love as he reunites with them.
