Gilberto Madrid

Gilberto Madrid, affectionately known as "Gil, and Papo" passed away on January 9, 2026, at the age of 73 in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas. Born on August 18, 1952, Gil was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose presence brought joy to those around him.

Gil was characterized by his funny, loving, and caring nature. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, making him a cherished figure among his family and friends. His laughter and lighthearted spirit enriched many gatherings, particularly during family barbecues and trips, where his love for fishing became a favorite pastime. A passionate fan of music, gambling and football, especially the Dallas Cowboys, Gil delighted in sharing those interests with his loved ones, creating lasting memories steeped in camaraderie and joy.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Carmen Madrid, and their four daughters: Christina (Severiano) Riojas, Irene Madrid, Laura (David) Madrid, and Rachel Madrid. In addition to his wife and daughters, Gil is survived by his son, Rene Gonzales, as well as five granddaughters, eleven grandsons, and one great-granddaughter, who were sources of immense pride and joy in his life. One of his proudest accomplishments was listening to his grandson sing, a talent he cherished deeply.

His familial bonds extended to his sisters Janie (Romeo) Mejia, Mary (Santos) Casarez, Anna Franco, Lola (Gary) Salazar, Gloria (Jesse) Maldonado, Emma Madrid, and Cindy (Johnny) Madrid, as well as his brothers Joey (Ruby) Madrid, Jesse (Rick) Madrid, and Johnny (Ruby) Olvera. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom carries their own cherished memories of him.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Cruz Dimas; his father, Juan Madrid; and his siblings: Frank Dimas, Valerio Guerrero, John Madrid Jr., Rita Madrid, and Hope Madrid. Their memory will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who loved him.

Gil's legacy is one of love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for family. He will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
