Gilberto R. Cardona, 89, passed away August 6, 2020 in Lubbock, Texas. He was born January 6, 1931 in San Antonio, Texas to Maria Rivera and Sabino Cardova. Gilberto shared 59 years with his wife Otila Cardona. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and retired from Texas Tech University as a groundskeeper. In his retirement, he and his wife made and sold their famous burritos. Gilberto enjoyed drinking coffee with his sweets, eating enchiladas, and burgers from Jim Dandy’s. He will be remembered for always laughing and making jokes and giving the doctors and nurses a run for their money.
He is survived by his wife Otila L. Cardona; his children Homero Escamilla, Marta Escamilla, Dora Martinez, Andrea Cardona, Gilbert Cardona, Jr.; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and his doggie Mrs. Tinker Bell.
He is preceded in death by his son Tony Escamilla.
The Holy Rosary will be prayed Monday, August 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Guajardo Funeral Chapels. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park.
