Debra "Debbie" Bonat, affectionately known by her nicknames "Lucy" and "Funny Girl," passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on February 24, 1952, in Lubbock, Texas, Debbie was a vibrant spirit whose presence was felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Debbie's career was both diverse and impactful. She worked for Midway Island in telecommunications and lent her talents to Reese Air Force Base and Edward Air Force Base, showcasing her skills in photography and radio. Many may remember her delightful voice from 98 Kool Radio, where she worked alongside notable figures Lew Dee and Diana. Her journey included time at a radio station in Corpus Christi and at Shugarts Studio, each platform allowing her to share her passion for music and communication.
A talented Cyndi Lauper impersonator, Debbie brought joy to countless audiences. Her performances left a lasting impression, with fans often seeking her autograph, and often caused an uprising when in character. A lover of music, she played both the organ and piano, showcasing her artistic talents in various ways. She was not only a performer but also a devoted mother, always putting her children first and nurturing their dreams.
Debbie's personality was as bright as a star; she was known for her sense of humor, outgoing nature, and friendly demeanor. Her interests included music, playing key instruments, and engaging in the antics inspired by Cyndi Lauper and her own band, "The Kids."
She is survived by her beloved children: Dave Freeman Bird, Heath Freeman, and Jason Freeman, who will carry forward her legacy of love and laughter. Debbie also leaves behind her siblings, including Arvetta Hall, Vicky Conway, and James Buddy Terry, who shared in her delightful journey through life, as well as numerous nieces and nephews she adored.
Debbie was preceded in death by James J. Terry, Esta Lee Terry, and Alex "Buzz" Terry, who now embrace her in eternal peace.
A memorial service to honor Debbie will take place on July 26, 2025, at Guajardo Funeral Chapels in Lubbock, Texas. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Debbie are invited to gather and celebrate her remarkable life.
