Benigno "Benny" Medina Sr.

Benigno Martinez Medina Sr, known as Benny and Popo to his family passed away on July 25, 2025 at 89 years of age. He is mourned by his wife of over 60 years, Lidia Reyes Medina and his 5 children: Maria Lidia “Bena” Medina, Maria Magdalena “Maggie” Medina (Adam Cavazos), Benigno “Ben” Medina Jr (Abigail Valdez), Andrea Medina Goodman & Doug Goodman, and Marisol Medina (Gilbert Perez). His grandchildren who brought him sincere joy are Robert Espinoza Jr, Sophia & Anthony Saenz, Jacob Medina (Noelle LaGrone), Sabrina Medina Goodman, Daniela Medina, Sarah Medina, Alliana Russell and Tyler Russell, Jasmine Puente (Chris Cruz Orozco), Nathaniel Puente, Douglas B. Goodman, & Julian Feliciano Perez. Also left to cherish his memory is his daughter in-law Leslie Cline Medina who despite divorce continues to be an important & cherished part of the family. Popo leaves behind 10 great grandchildren. Benny joins in rest his father and mother and his beloved brothers Frank and Augustine Medina. He is survived by his sisters Reyna and Emma. Born in 1936 in San Sebastian, Texas, Benny worked as a migrant worker for the first years of his life and was always able to identify a crop in the fields when on road trips. He came to Lubbock from the fields of the Rio Grande Valley and worked that hard for the rest of his life and his family never lacked for anything, especially love. Benny, known as Shorty to his coworkers, worked at Caprock Business Forms for over 40 years and was well known and appreciated by many in the downtown Lubbock area. Benny volunteered early on with Lubbock ISD and at his church, Our Lady of Grace. Benny Medina was always finding new friends wherever he traveled and treated everyone he met with friendship and humor. Popo was a beloved and cherished man with an almost perpetual smile who loved his wife, children and grandchildren unfathomably. He didn’t love once, he loved you two times: in the moment and in his heart. He could always tell you a joke or make you laugh with a silly action or story. He was a beautiful, big-hearted human being, and all who knew him will mourn him deeply.
