Apolonio Morales

September 13, 1941 — September 26, 2025

Apolonio Morales, lovingly known as Tio Chino or Polo, departed this world on September 26, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas, at the age of 84. Born on September 13, 1941, in the quaint village of La Zorilla, Durango, Mexico, Apolonio embraced life with an indomitable spirit, manifesting a rich tapestry of love, dedication, and strength throughout his existence.

With a career that spanned over three decades, Apolonio's impact was profoundly felt at both the University of New Mexico and the University of Texas at El Paso, where he devoted more than twenty years of his life. His talents extended beyond academia, as he was also a skilled Native American jeweler, creating pieces that were not only reflective of his artistic spirit but also served as cherished heirlooms for many. Despite not finishing high school, his intelligence shone brightly, demonstrating an unmatched street smarts and wisdom that enriched the lives of those around him.

As the eldest sibling, Apolonio naturally stepped into a paternal role, nurturing his brothers and sister with unwavering support after the passing of their father, Librado Morales. He provided for his family, exhibiting a devotion to duty that defined his character.

Upon marrying the love of his life, Socorro, Apolonio not only became a devoted husband, but he also embraced the greater calling of a father to her three children; Antonio, Laura, and Marisela. With an open heart, he adopted them as his own, raising them with unwavering love and dedication. The couple later welcomed two children of their own; Jesusita and Edgar. His home was imbued with values of hard work, dedication, and ambition, as Apolonio led by example, teaching his children the importance of striving for success.

Apolonio's personality was a brilliant fusion of strength and warmth. Known for his sharp dress and dapper appearances, he carried himself with confidence, always exuding charisma whether waltzing across the dance floor or engaging in heartfelt conversations about life. He possessed a humor that warmed hearts, and behind his tough exterior was a man who embodied silliness and kindness once the initial barriers were broken. His word was his bond, and he lived his life according to principles of honesty and directness, proving himself a rock upon which his family could always lean.

Beyond the ethos of family, Apolonio found joy in simple pleasures. Meals shared with Socorro became treasured moments of connection as they explored diverse cuisines together. Their shared love of classic films created a retreat from the world, while mornings spent watching the news, especially updates from President Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed his pride in his Mexican-American heritage.

Tragically, he succumbed to a broken heart, waiting for his beloved Socorro, with whom he shared a lifetime of cherished memories. This profound love, a testament to the deep bond they had forged, echoes through the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves behind his loving wife, Socorro, his children-Antonio, Laura, Marisela, Jesusita, and Edgar and his sisters, Ofelia Ramírez and Maria Guadalupe Flores.

Apolonio Morales is preceded in death by his parents, Librado Morales and Mariana Ordaz, siblings Gregorio, Fernando, Juana, Maria, Jesus, and Librado Morales, and his godson, Jose Luis Nunez Morales.

In reflecting upon the life of Apolonio Morales, we recognize a legacy defined by love, commitment, and the relentless pursuit of excellence—a life lived fully and generously, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.
